How can I get my daughter started in go kart racing?
Posted by admin | Under Uncategorized Saturday Feb 7, 2009
we went to a bush race and all she is talking about is wanting to race. I have no idea how to get started. I would like to go some place to let her try.
First thing… find a local kart track. Just like with car racing there are different styles of tracks. I used to spend quite a bit of time at a dirt oval cart track. Once you find a track and decide you want to race there, research the kart classes. Some are based on age range. Some are a totally different style of kart. Talk to some of the teams about their karts. Many of them may not give you all of their secrets but they will give you enough info to get started. Heck you may even find somebody willing to sell a current class winning cart because they plan to move up. Once you have secured a kart and other equipment, depending on track rules, you should be able to show up on race day and run. It is NOT a cheap hobby. Be prepared to spend a small fortune just to get started. Good luck and have fun with it. Think of it as a great way to bond with your daughter.
i need a go kart frame can anyone help?

Posted by admin | Under Uncategorized Wednesday Feb 4, 2009
Welded up most of the frame today and got my clutch, sprocket holder, sprocket and chain from the kart shop. I have to get a seat before i mount the other three bars as two bars are for the seat and i cant weld them when i dont no the size of the mounts on the seat. When i get that and mount it i can weld in the other bar for the foot rest to what feels comfortable. Then i have to make up the spindles and weld them on. Once ive done that then i can get the diameter of the kart and then i can make the back axle. Once ive done that i can fit on the sprocket and holder and can drill the motor mounts and hook up the chain. Then i have to make up a little brake disc on the lathe at the same time i get the axle done and then mount 2 bicycle brakes on the disc. It will brake pretty good. On my motorized bike i got one set of brakes and that stops me pretty quick from 50km/h. Given the weight of the kart i will use two for double the grip. Then i have to make a steering wheel, make a shaft for it and make some steering arms. After that i can make some pedals and mount them and hook up the brakes and throttle.
Once ive done all this it ready to go! I reckon it will take me about 2 weeks to complete or just under. I think the completion date will be about January 13th. Stay tuned for more updates! There wont be another update for another week or so as i have to build this at my dads factory and he is on holidays atm and only comes to the factory like once a week to do stuff. He said he will be there next week so i should get a lot done next week.

What do I need for my go kart and go kart motor?
Posted by admin | Under go kart frames Sunday Feb 1, 2009So, I just bought this go kart frame for $75. Lucky for my dad and I we found it had a clutch and rear sprocket that came with it. My dad was unfamiliar with the type of clutch though, we think its a belt clutch. Here have a look at it:

The go kart, as you can tell, has no motor. We have a honda 5hp motor that we took off of a pressure washer. Now, the shaft on the motor is a standard quarter of an inch, so according to that and the clutch, what do I need to make it run? If it is a belt drive which Im assuming it is what kind of sprocket do I have to get?
The guy we bought the kart from had trouble thinking of a brand so he finally decided on “lightning-Karts” out of atlanta. I went on the web site and couldn’t find the parts I needed so I think he was wrong. Anyone know what kind of brakes these are and where I can find new ones?

As you can see their shot. Are there any other types of brakes that will work? If not where can I find a replacement.
Here are some pictures of the kart:

As you can see its a little off balanced, thats only because the back wheel is flat.
If you know where I can get the parts for this or if you know what brand it is please let me know. Thanks
Oh and if you see anything else that it needs let me know :]
its a centrifigal clutch. The faster the motor spins it the pulley closes up and makes the belt tighter making it pull the sprocket. You need a pulley on the engine, not a sprocket.the larger the pulley the less rpm’s it will take to make the clutch engage
Was a secret project.
