1) Don't even THINK of buying a kart until you get a lot more knowledge. Start at www.ekartingnews.com and check out the "new to karting" section. Then find your nearest track (there's a track directory at www.tsracing.com). Visit the track and ask lots of questions. At 13, you will be competing in the Junior classes. (age 12-15).

2) Don't buy this kart you're looking at! You do NOT want a kart with a TaG engine to start with, and you can't race it in a Junior class.

3) Don't buy new! Once you get more familiar with the sport, you will find it very easy and MUCH cheaper to get a good used kart that is a couple years old. For the price of new, you could buy karts for both you and your dad. Don't forget that you will also need to buy safety gear, starter, kart stand, etc.

Hope this gets you pointed in the right direction. You will find that in different areas of the country, different classes are run and different chassis are popular. Make sure you get a kart that has support from a local kart shop. Arrow karts are popular here in Ohio, and I highly recommend them. You want a kart with a Yamaha KT100 engine.
Karting is a great, super fun family sport with great people that will really help you a lot (till you start beating them!)

Email me if you have any other questions.

EDIT: Just looked at your other questions....as far as what to wear, most tracks will let you race in jeans and a heavy skid-resistant jacket. But most racers do buy a suit.

And make sure you don't buy a kart set up for Sportsman. They have a restricted carb and you'll have to switch it to Junior one.

CV joint on a go-kart, What kind should i get?

Friday Mar 27, 2009

So basically I'm a high school student trying to make our go-kart front wheel drive. To do this I need a CV joint for the steering. The only problem is that whenever I try to buy one it asks from my car model, which sadly, go-kart is not one of them. Any suggestions??

You might also try your local used auto parts and get a set VERY cheep

Homemade go-kart steering problem. HELP!?

Friday Mar 27, 2009

I have this lawnmower http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_07137192000P and i'm going to turn it into a go-kart…….. I'm going to reverse the front drive to make it go in the opposite direction…… and make the back the front…. and weld a chair over it all, but anyways i can't figure out a way to steer it so i need some help!

See if you can get the steering from an old rider mower. If you can weld, you may be able to extend the wheelbase a little by welding the steering on the front and removing the stock wheels. That way it won't look like you are riding a gas-powered Hover Round.

How do I wire a steering wheel mount kill switch on a go kart to the motor?

Friday Mar 27, 2009

Usually, on the type of motor for a go-cart, there will be a throttle on the engine. On the engine throttle, there should be a kill switch on the portion of the throttle that doesn't move, aligning with the part that does move when it would be positioned at its lowest setting. If your motor doesn't have it, you need to get the right kind of motor (one that doesn't have the brake on the magneto like a lawn mower engine). You will need to set your kill switch up to ground the wire out, which will ground your coil, stopping the engine.

Anyone out there got ideas/drawings for a very simple steering mechanism for a model go kart?

Friday Mar 27, 2009

Are you wanting a mechanism that will turn the wheels when you turn the steering wheel or one that will steer the car remotely by a wire or RC?
The former is most easily done with a flat bar steering arm soldered in an L position on the end of the steering wheel shaft (or held with set screws or pinned in a larger version) and the end of flat has a hole. The front wheel are mounted on pivots with an arm at right angles to the pivot axis which also has holes. A wire is bent with crank ends to fit in the holes to connect the steering arm to one of the wheels and another is bent to connect the right wheel to the left. The wire between the wheels is put in first, bent to fit when both wheels are straight. The wire from steering arm is put in next with the arm pointing down (or up but centered) and the wheels centered.
On larger models tubing is used instead of wire and threaded fittings can allow adjustment.

Where can i find free or cheap instructions and diagrams to make a Go Kart?

Friday Mar 27, 2009

Me and my friend are a Go Kart and we are getting stuck at certain bits in the process of making it. I was just wondering if anyone knew a website or link to a good set of diagrams and instructions on the frame, steering, motor mounting etc.
