The Elusive Go Kart Engine – Smoking, Choking and Backfiring – What is That All About?
One of the most valuable lessons to be learned when playing with go karts is engine repair. Also, like any big problem to solve, some of the engine problems can be very elusive and frustrating. I had this engine that just would not run right. It would run, but not fast, and it was very frustrating.
What would occur is that the engine would start and run just fine, but when the throttle was opened up the engine would just back fire through the carburetor, out the exhaust, blow black smoke and just would not get past really anything but idle. You can imagine my frustration. I have this elaborate strait tube intake (which really is a high rise manifold) and this oversize carburetor mounted to this 4 horsepower Briggs.
I had that engine torn down probably twice. Removed the head, checked the valve clearances, tore apart the carburetor, added more sealant to the intake runner and the carburetor interface…all to NO avail. The engine still ran like junk. Having just exhausted all remedies, I took off the engine and tore it apart completely looking for the elusive problem.
And after I tore it apart I had to laugh, and be educated. The points on the engine had a spring that keeps the points coming back into position. Trouble was, the spring was on sloppy, and allowed the points to literally float as the rpms increased. So what occurred was the engine was literally losing spark at the higher rpms. The floating points acted like a governor. Old “his and pop” engines actually use this method for slowing their engines down. Instead of playing with the throttle, they play with the ignition to slow the engine down.
Once the engine was reassembled the engine ran full throttle no problem. Understanding the reasons why engines behave the way they do is very important in diagnosing the problem. One of the elusive things about this problem though is the assumption that the points are fine, that the spark is consistent. The trouble shooting motto is question everything and exhaust it at the least cost.

hi! I want to buy a double seat elecrtic go kart for my two sons and my husband thinks that they should sit in it at the same time(a sharing thing) so is there a doulbe seated electric go kart for children out there the cost is not what im worried about. it would be more perforable to buy it at a store thanks!

what do i have to do to a brand new go-kart engine?
My Grandad bought me a go-kart engine just before he died and i was wondering what i have to do with all the fluids and everything before i start it up. What fluids and where to put them?
it wasn’t filled whem it came in the box This is one of the things my grandfather wasn’t able to teach me before he died but i do know alot i know you have to put oil and gas in that’s pretty obvious but there is other things you put in to make the engine last longer
and run better
if the motor came already filled then put gas in it and go. if not you’ll need oil too. look for a small twist off cap thats probly the oil fill. also besure you know how to check the oil because if you put too much in you can mess up your engine if you don’t have enough you could also mess up your engine. best to find someone that knows what they are doing and ask them because all motors are different so i couldn’t tell you with out seeing the motor

I put seat belts on my kids carts, but had a roll bar on them too. I am not sure staying with a rolling cart with the seat belt would be a good idea.

What is the best Go Kart Engine I can get?
It has to be under $200, and I want to know if it is good.
Go to harbor freights and you can buy a blue engine that is 6.5hp for $150 i think. It is not name brand but it is good. They made a whole go kart class just for that engine since it is so good and cheap. If you want to know more about it google box stock engine.Make sure it is a horizontal shaft for a go kart

How To Build a Go-Kart That is Cheap?
i have no materials, but i am willing to buy them and i am willing to learn how to use them. I have regular tools but i can buy more. Should i buy certain parts? What are the basic parts that i need, and how do i get them?
Buy the components, frame engine, wheels, suspension, brakes, transmission.
Your "regular tools" will serve to assemble them.
It will probably be cheaper to find a good used one.
