Go Karts – Going Faster?

I race in a sealed engine go-kart league in Avon, NY. I am the slowest person in my class on the front stretch. Even the slower cars in the turns can zoom by me like I am standing still on the straight. I use a Coyote SS chassis, all the karts in my class are the same weight (+ -1 or 2lbs), and we use the same tires. This is a sealed class, so I can’t take out the governor or anything drastic like that. Any suggestions?

Gears. You are probably running a different gear ratio than the rest of the field. If it is a true sealed engine class. However, there are always ways to modify engines, and people will find out how to max out the rules in order to run a faster engine.

what is a 250 national? whats the fastest kart you can buy?

eg. how fast can it go? whats the engine make? whats the chassis like?

and what is the fastest 2 stroke kart you can buy
how fast does it go thanks

is it a kz1

You might be able to buy or make a faster one, but I’m pretty sure these are the fastest that are raced: http://www.250superkarts.com/

they are 250cc 2 strokes from motorcycles. These should be faster and more powerful then a kz1 engine.

Career in Motor-sports?

It’s still an idea in the making, so I was hoping for some input from the yahoo community.

For the first time ever, I sat behind the wheel of a "high-speed" go-kart at a track, and did 3 races.. It was my first time racing, ever, except small amusement park kiddie-karts, and I was 2 seconds from being the fastest car on the track overall.

This made me wonder, I may have potential for a career in motorsports.

Anyone have any good input about this idea? Anyone have anywhere I can start? I live in the Northern California area, and any input local would help, although I’m looking at anything that can get me into even small stuff.

The track up here has leagues, where they do a six-week championship on Wednesday nights at 7pm, which start up in 2 weeks.

Problem is, it’s $200 to register a team, you have to come up with 3 other people, and it’s $25 a racer, per racer.. $800 bucks total, either to be spent by one person or each get their own chunks.. However, I’m not sure this is the best way to get into it.

I was advised also by an employee there that teams do pick up stranglers for their race teams during championships, I was thinking that may be a good way to get in cheap and get noticed, as well. But how many serious-motorsport scouts sit at go kart races picking people out?

Anything?

The track you mention sounds like an indoor arrive and drive place, and its a great place to get started. I don’t quite understand the team racing format you describe, but my local indoor track has individual championships which costs around $500 for a season.

Unfortunately there are no scouts at these places, at least not any that are looking to hire drivers. However, there are probably people involved in many different levels of the sport, so you can use it as an opportunity to develop connections.

Indoor karting is great to get your feet wet but if you’re serious about a career as a driver you need to move up from there. I feel the two best options are serious outdoor karting, or pro racing schools. northern california is a good place for either of these options. For karting, I know of IKF region 7 or PKC maybe others too. For racing schools, look into Skip barber at Laguna Seca or Jim Russel at Sonoma. Unfortunately, you will probably have to fund all this out of pocket.

I have a lot more information about all this on my blog, check out http://www.aracingdream.com. Feel free to ask me any questions there.

How much would it cost for an engineer to mount a 125cc engine to a go kart?

I just want to know whether I can mount the engine to the back of my go kart or do I have to pay someone some money to do it. Also I only a small amount of money in my savings so on a very tight budget. I am only 14 and not and adult so I don’t know much, but I do have an electric drill and screws + brackets for mounting. However I seriously do not wanna mess up this. Plus I know it shifts so I need the gear changer at the steering wheel with acceleration.

Provided everything fits and there is no real need for modifications you can probably have this done for about $125 (about 1.5-2 hours labor). I would call some local lawn and garden service shops and maybe your family’s local mechanic
and ask if they can help you with this.

Where can you race go-karts if you don’t have a kart?

I am looking for a place to race go-karts in Southern California. I don’t have my own kart, so the place would have to let you rent them. I am talking about an outdoor place, not indoors. I really want to find a place where I can race for money, but anywhere would be great.
I’m looking for a more experienced place. For example, "San Diego Karting Association" would be perfect, except you need your own kart.

mirimar speed curcuit in san diego is a great place. it has an indoor course and they provide everything.

Building a go-kart/small car?

Its going to be exoskeleton so there’s really no body except to cover the engine. Basically its just a frame with moving parts which makes it move. (eg no A/C)
__________________________________________________
All the parts that make a car move are coming from this 1970 carb corolla: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c6/Toyota_Corolla_front.jpg (engine, trans, etc…)

The parts go into this ready made chassis and frame: http://www.sdrsportscars.co.uk/images/chass/Jan%205th%20chassis%20pictures%202007%20014.jpg

What is a "micron 3" for a shifter kart?

It’s an electronic gauge that gives rpm, temp and egt. It is also a data logger that records engine parameters. Some also record lap times so the driver can see her/his times while driving.

It’s actually Mychron3 and it has been superceeded by the Mychron4
