See if you can get the steering from an old rider mower. If you can weld, you may be able to extend the wheelbase a little by welding the steering on the front and removing the stock wheels. That way it won't look like you are riding a gas-powered Hover Round.

Usually, on the type of motor for a go-cart, there will be a throttle on the engine. On the engine throttle, there should be a kill switch on the portion of the throttle that doesn't move, aligning with the part that does move when it would be positioned at its lowest setting. If your motor doesn't have it, you need to get the right kind of motor (one that doesn't have the brake on the magneto like a lawn mower engine). You will need to set your kill switch up to ground the wire out, which will ground your coil, stopping the engine.

Are you wanting a mechanism that will turn the wheels when you turn the steering wheel or one that will steer the car remotely by a wire or RC?
The former is most easily done with a flat bar steering arm soldered in an L position on the end of the steering wheel shaft (or held with set screws or pinned in a larger version) and the end of flat has a hole. The front wheel are mounted on pivots with an arm at right angles to the pivot axis which also has holes. A wire is bent with crank ends to fit in the holes to connect the steering arm to one of the wheels and another is bent to connect the right wheel to the left. The wire between the wheels is put in first, bent to fit when both wheels are straight. The wire from steering arm is put in next with the arm pointing down (or up but centered) and the wheels centered.
On larger models tubing is used instead of wire and threaded fittings can allow adjustment.

Anyone have any tips or plans on how to do this? Also what horsepower engine should we get for our kart since it’s going to be a two seater weighing at about 250-300 pounds with us on it?

I need some design help, mostly since i’ve never built anything this big in my life before, so this is a big start

Use metal as you frame it may be expensive but it will be cheaper in the long run

I just want to know whether I can mount the engine to the back of my go kart or do I have to pay someone some money to do it. Also I only a small amount of money in my savings so on a very tight budget. I am only 14 and not and adult so I don’t know much, but I do have an electric drill and screws + brackets for mounting. However I seriously do not wanna mess up this. Plus I know it shifts so I need the gear changer at the steering wheel with acceleration.

Provided everything fits and there is no real need for modifications you can probably have this done for about $125 (about 1.5-2 hours labor). I would call some local lawn and garden service shops and maybe your family’s local mechanic
and ask if they can help you with this.

I am planning to make a simple go kart with some college friends of mine. I am studying to be an engineer and figured that this would be a good project for me. One of my friends has several lawnmower engines for us to use, including both push mower and riding mower engines. We are trying to make the most simple go kart possible. He is what we are going for

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/rvs/1175444300.html

I am looking for very simple instructions on how to achieve this and from searching google i have found around 20 guides that are all very complicated. I just need somebody to tell me exactly what i need to make the steering from this picture and how to connect the parts. I also need help with how to configure petals. I think as far as powering the rear wheels goes, i can use the riding mowers engine and keep the original back drive axle with wheels attached, because it will still be connected to engine. If i were to use a push mower though, how would that work. Please be as detailed as possible. Thanks.

Oh and i will pay $5 in paypal to best answer.

I am not an engineer or mechanic, just a "barn-yard" type mechanic. I don’t want five bucks, just a thumbs up if I help you out. Outside of the obvious, like the frame, I am assuming you have access to a welder. Before we get into the the steering and pedals, have you thought about the clutch? If you haven’t, you will need a centrifugal clutch. Direct drive off a lawn mower engine is not going to work too well. I can’t explain this too well, but trust me, it won’t. Those are set up for mower blades not starting a cart with a person on it at a dead start, you will probably stall the engine.

Assuming you have a frame, axles, engine, clutch, pedals, brakes. Don’t forget brakes, everybody forgets that. You are probably stuck with a hydraulic set up. I don’t know of any other good way of setting up a braking system for a cart. I certainly couldn’t fab one up, but could improvise. Typically this is a disc brake arrangement on the rear axle integrated into the sprocket. Use cable, for the throttle pedal to the engine. Use a spring for "throttle return". The steering components as far as raw fabrication, at least from frame to wheel/stud will be tough, one that pivots and can be connected. Again, couldn’t fab one, but could improvise. Use the ones off a riding mower.

As far as connecting the steering and the various components. Most hardware stores sell threaded rod in various lengths, diameter and thread (like coarse or fine). Because of all the various sizes you will be able to get the what you need, for the job, like 3/8 coarse thread. You can use nuts to adjust free-play, tac it with the welder, cut it, whatever. You will be able to find a size that fits any need, tap the raw material, get nuts, use a tap and die. This will give you some options on the steering, it’s not expensive, if you botch something you are not out a bunch on money.

I would not mess with using a push mower engine. Use an engine (like a lawn edger) or from the riding mower like you suggest. The hardware you would need to make this work would probably create more work than you want to mess with. Again, I am not an engineer or mechanic but using a regular push lawn mower engine is more than I would want to mess with.
