Go Karts – Going Faster?

I race in a sealed engine go-kart league in Avon, NY. I am the slowest person in my class on the front stretch. Even the slower cars in the turns can zoom by me like I am standing still on the straight. I use a Coyote SS chassis, all the karts in my class are the same weight (+ -1 or 2lbs), and we use the same tires. This is a sealed class, so I can’t take out the governor or anything drastic like that. Any suggestions?

Gears. You are probably running a different gear ratio than the rest of the field. If it is a true sealed engine class. However, there are always ways to modify engines, and people will find out how to max out the rules in order to run a faster engine.

what is a 250 national? whats the fastest kart you can buy?

You might be able to buy or make a faster one, but I’m pretty sure these are the fastest that are raced: http://www.250superkarts.com/

they are 250cc 2 strokes from motorcycles. These should be faster and more powerful then a kz1 engine.

Building a go-kart/small car?

Its going to be exoskeleton so there’s really no body except to cover the engine. Basically its just a frame with moving parts which makes it move. (eg no A/C)

Cheapest possible way to make a go kart?

Ok so I’m really into making a go kart but I only have maybe 100$ to spend. How would I make one?
What power source? (Im not pedaling!)
what would I make the chassis out of?

For the chassis, what material could i use? wood, pvc pipe, anything cheap and found at my local lowes.
To power it, could I use a cordless drill? how much HP would that punch out?
This isnt for racing.

Remeber im on a budget

Thick Plywood for chassis about 3ft x 6ft and 1" thick.
2 x 4"x6" for axles.
4 x wagon wheels.
4 x 20 penny nails.
3-4 ft rope for steering.

Ok, this will get you something with 4 wheels that will roll downhill for about $30-40. Possibly you can put a chainsaw motor to power a wheel and mostly to make vroom vroom noises as you roll downhill mostly powered by gravity.

Go-Kart/ Dune buggy plans or blueprints?
I want to build a two person go-kart with a 250 cc to a 600cc. Looking to get one to do some off roading not much but also work around the yard and land i have like pulling out dead tree branches and things, maybe to drive to and from my hunting standing and or without a deer in tow. Anyone know of any plans i am a welder and know my way around an engine but building a chassis is not in the knowledge yet.
Also i would like to have a short wheel base and a width of about 4 ft if not less…

Pulling trees and such you may want to consider a 1600 ish volks motor.
or using a FWD Mid engine design.

But the thing about buggies/sand rails is that in almost all cases you can save a lot of cash finding a complete one then building one from the ground up(works for many vehicle builds).

But then you loose out on saying you built it.

Now you can buy a complete frame(or copy one) then throw something like a manual rack/pinion steering setup with a basic sway coil over design. And most of these can be found by a (google) buggy/sand rail or race car search.
The designs will change but find what works and copy it.

For a off road buggy. You may want to start with a sand rail frame and fab in motor mounts for a FWD engine in the passenger side. No t case needed. The limited slip will give you a little play but for the most part you will have a very light weight 4wd buggy that can pull your stuff around without spinning the wheels all over the place.

Whoops missed the two person thing well it can still be done you just have to position the motor behind the passenger with the drive shafts between you both(covered of course).

It’s a decent deal for the chassis. I don’t know the seller personally, but I know of him and would say he’s trustworthy, wouldn’t try to rip you off. That being said, I think you could take his deal and be just fine. However, there are also many other good karts for sale in the area that you could get for less. Email me, we’ll talk. How can I make this kart turn?

I race go-karts in the WKA. I have an ultramax chassis and we run burris tires because of track rules. If anybody has any idea about what I’m talking about, how can I get this thing to turn? I race dirt oval and many of our adjustments just don’t seem to cut it.

I had a few ultramax centerforce chassis. Only one track that I raced at had the burris tire rule. I ran the same setup there week after week. Depending on what the track is like can change a setup so even if I could remember what we used to do that setup might not work very well for you.

Stagger is key in getting around a track. We would buy really wide rims and stretch the tires till they looked like footballs!!

If your having problems with grip you can get some spray that will soften the compound of the tires. You can spray it on, wrap it in plastic wrap, let it sit for at least 24 hours, remove it a few hours before the race and spray it again then let them sit in the sun. This does a great job of softening up tires for more grip.

If you have access to four corner scales, try scaling it out and adjust your weight. Ballast is a tool, it may slow you down, but sometimes a better handling cart can beat a faster one.
