i am planning to build a go kart and do not know what engine to use, i have never built a go kart or motor bike or anything. it would be useful if you could get a few different options based on cost (for example a $300, a $500 and a $700, i would like to know a good but low budget engine). I’m not into competitive racing, i just want to build this for fun and experience. i live in Victoria so i need one i can get easily. Thanks

Best bet is to take an old dirt bike engine, around a 125cc 2 stroke.. Run a clutch and a hand shifter.
Your going to be infinitely more happy with this, and if you shop around you can get one alot cheaper than a normal horizontal shaft engine with a centrifugal clutch.
nothing as fun as 20hp and a clutch in a little go-cart

I have broken my mini stallion to drive with the use of a friends easy entry cart, but she needs it back and we are ready to have our own anyway. My husband says that they look easy to build and if he had blue prints he could build me one to save money since they are so expensive. Does anyone know where I can obtain building plans for a mini size cart? My horse is 33" tall. Thank you

Taking or finding a picture of a cart and then scaling it to the size you want may be the best bet. For example if you wanted something with 15" tires then you could take a picture of a wagon and scale everything to size by the tire measurement. Ask your husband if he could make a cart off a picture or let him use your friend’s cart to get the correct sizes of tires, length and width.

i have a 5hp Tecumseh go kart engine . it is straight stock . nothing added to it or anything. it doesnt sound like its opening up all the way

Wow this brings me back …mini-bikes and all.

Typically these small engines have governors on them so they don’t rev past a certain RPM. Typically they are "redlined" at about 3600 RPM. You get much higher than that you run the risk of throwing the rod and blowing the case …not pretty. I would make sure the throttle is adjusted so that when it is full open, the throttle is full open. If the carb has two mixture screws (which I doubt), one of them will be for low speed or idle and the other is for high rpm …one or both screws may need a little tweaking. If you just have one screw make sure it’s adjusted to give the best idle. There may also be a throttle limiter of some kind …like a screw or stop used to tone down the top speed of the cart by limiting how for the throttle will open.

Used to be guys would swap carbs, replacing the cheesy cheap tiny stock carb with a slightly larger more sophisticated one from a small motorcycle …of course that would require making a custom intake adapter. All kinds of porting of the intake and exhaust, putting a thinner head gasket to tweak the compression ratio. But back then there was an entire aftermarket for this sorta stuff. These days there’s just no market for it so unless your handy in the shop you’re pretty much stuck with the stock setup.

the engine is new and doesn’t fit the frame, and it doesn’t match the mount. will a 5 dollar butane torch hold the bottom of the engine to the frame?

something like this…

http://cgi.ebay.com/Refillable-Butane-Torch-Lighter-2372-F-Melts-Metals_W0QQitemZ230405065167QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item35a53649cf#ht_1069wt_947

i’m not sure if my frame is steel or aluminum, and i’m not sure what the bottom of the engine is either. That says it will melt aluminum, and i looked online to see the melting point of steel which is around 1500 average, and that gets up to 2375, so in theory it seems like this would work but i thought before i bought everything, i would get some more advice

or any other ideas how to mount this to the back of my gokart (cheaply)?

thanks!

This little e-bay torch looks like a glorified cigarette lighter. These are used to melt low-temperature solder when joining very small electrical wires.

Don’t be so lazy. Buy a small 3/16 piece of hot rolled steel and make an engine mount and drill holes to match the motor and and kart frame. Bolt everything together with adjusting slots. Geepers, the motor is probably aluminum and the kart frame is probably steel. What happens if you could weld the motor to the kart? How are you going to adjust the chain drive? How are you going to remove the motor for something bigger and better. You’d better learn how to decide what parts are made of what! Find a machinist on your street or town. They could teach you in ten minutes what metals you’re working on.

Think Think Think!
