Olivehurst Redneck Engineering presents Biggity’s newest whip…..badass AMC Hornet Sportabout Wagon

Friday Apr 23, 2010

Lemme set the scene….I got this scheduled pickup in my cab for 2:30, a lady named Alice needed to be picked up from Walmart…and I’m late. I’m stressin’ at this point cuz I’m not supposed to be late…but of course I am. I pull up to the curb and am greeted by your standard 80 year old lady…cane, cart full of groceries, and just about the sweetest-looking lady in the world. I walk towards her and hear “You’re late!” and I think “And so it begins” as I load her groceries, rolling my eyes and preparing for the verbal assault I fear is coming once I get her groceries loaded and get back in my cab.

She slowly works her way into the front seat (which I despise, as I usually put all my stuff there), and I get all of her stuff loaded up…and close the hatch on the trusty little Scion xB. I get in, having prepared to listen to yelling the whole way….when the strangest thing happened…..she was nice!!!.

I was shocked…and as we drove the 4 miles from Walmart to her home, we talked like a Grandson and Grandmother would. On the trip, we drove past my truck, which had broken down on my drive to work that very morning…lol. As we drove In the course of the conversation, she brings up the fact that she is 80, and no longer drives her car. I of course, being a hopelessly addicted Petrol-head (see TopGear for an explanation) ask “What kind of car?” She then told me something that changed my life in a second….”It’s a 1976 AMC Hornet Sportabout Wagon…bought it new in 1975″.

My jaw was in my lap…the AMC auto line is generally heralded to be the UGLIEST car line on the planet…but for some reason I find myself inexplicably drawn to the rare, obscure, and generally ugly cars, just because they are unique. We pull into her trailer park (don’t judge), and I am just about shaking with anticipation to see this car…when it hits me…I don’t have the means or permission from Carrie to buy another car…I still have my 1954 IHC R-121 rat-rod to get running right…there is no way Carrie will let me buy another car…let alone the fact we can’t afford it.

We turn the corner and I see it for the first time…and I was floored. It was just as I pictured it…uglier than a Rolling Stones group photo. The standard “car sat for six years” evidence was present…lots of cobwebs on the tires and chassis, about 2 inches of dust covering the whole car (save for the cat-paw prints which covered the windshield like a connect-the-dots picture), and dirt surrounding the tires’ contact spot in the driveway. Anyone else, including my lovely wife, sees a car that’s been sitting for years and thinks “There’s a reason someone parks a car for years….it’s a pile of doo-doo”. But someone like me, with 10w30 pumping through my veins, I see a completed car…and this one had my mind running.

As I carried her groceries into her home for her, I commented several times on how sweet I found the car and how I wish I could find one like it.....as any other car-nut like me knows....that's the way you find out if it's for sale. I think she picked up on my subtle attempts, because she asked me "Are you interested in buying it? I don't drive it anymore...hasn't left the driveway in six years". I at first say (very responsibly, I might add) "No, I can't afford to buy anything else right now...I have to get my truck running right before I get anything else...but thank you". She said "ok", and I continued to carry in her stuff.

Then I decided to see just how much she thought her car was worth, so I asked "Just out of curiosity, how much are you trying to get for it?". Her next reply is what changed my life in an instant. "Is $150 too much?" she asked as I stopped dead in my tracks. "Did you say one-hundred and fifty dollars?!" I asked as I stood, jaw agape, holding two bags. "Yes, 150....is that fair?" Needless to say, I was so stoked I could barely breathe. But then I got slapped back into reality by the realization that I still had to run it by Carrie, who I was certain was gonna say "Are you crazy?".

So I finished up with the groceries, collected my fare, and promised her I was gonna call the wife and at least tell her about the car. I called Carrie, fully expecting her to say "Hell no" and hang up. But she didn't. She actually told me to go withdraw $150 and buy it. Her reasoning was I could drive the Hornet whilst we worked on the truck at our own pace...and so now I'm the proud owner of a super-clean, one-owner 1976 AMC Hornet Sportabout Wagon. It passed smog the very first try with no problems whatsoever, and it's even cheap to register. 258 c.i. inline six with one-barrel carb, and the Torque-Command auto trans. Oh yes....it's on.....
