I used a 3/4″ axle …
I used a 3/4″ axle with a keyway in it, but that proved too weak and broke several times. I think I have a1″ solid axle on it now with 3/4″ spindles welded on to each end (wheels have 3/4″ ID bearings)

I think you could …
I think you could do that, you would just have to make sure the steering knuckle would work with larger tires. I will try to post more from the full length DVD BUILD YOUR OWN GO KART in the next few weeks.
