Go kart exhaust………….?

You can do it. I doubt it will damage the engine, but it will reduce the engines performance greatly due to the restrictive exhaust flow.
You can buy a decent muffler for this engine at a garden equipment supply shop. Should be pretty cheap and it will work much better.
