   aluminnum pipe is best then mild steel depending on weight needed

   If you are bolting together, 6061-T6 aluminum.
   The aluminum from you Hardware store is only half as strong.

   Welding; see if you have someone that can weld EMT from Home Despot.

   (we call it tubing when used for rigidity; pipe is for carrying gas and fluids)

   Might make from plastic pvc pipe first to be sure you have your geometry correct, then do the metal tubing..
