What other engines can be used for a Go Kart Engine?
Posted by admin | Under Uncategorized Tuesday Mar 10, 2009Can I use a golf cart engine, a boat engine, a motor scooter or anything else as a Go Kart engine. And what is the best engine to use for the go kart…Horizital or vertical and why??? Does anyone know where i can find one.

If you can build it you can use pretty much anything as a go cart engine…we've used everything from 5 hourse briggs engines to 750 cc kawasaki's.

Side shaft engine is the simplist setup.
Rototiller usually have 3HP or better.

Any side shat engine will do.
Your not limited though with a little patients you could have a fast toy

well, sure any of these or any other engine could be used. Usually boat motors have a water pick-up and use the water the boat is in to cool the engine, so you would have to design a whole cooling system to make a boat motor work. Same dealio with any liquid cooled engine. radiators, pumps and hoses, thermostats and overflow tanks, and an auxilliary fan, so I would go with an air cooled engine, like a lawn mower or certain motorcycles. As far as the crank position, if you use a vertical crank, you will have to have helical or worm gears to put the power to the wheels. It's been done( rear drive cars for example) but without the right tools and equiptment, it wouldn't be easy. I recommend a horizontal crank engine, so you can power the whells from a chain or belt. If you have a choice, prob. the easiest, best choice would be an old 3 or 4 wheeler or mini bike engine, with an automatic clutch, and a transmission. Then you could really make you go cart go. The problem (in my eyes) with most go carts is the combo of no transmission and a centrifugal clutch. In order to have any kind of speed, you have to have it geared to where it won't take off with any agility, and the transmission on the afforementioned items will help a lot!

Did you ever consider using an electric motor?The future will depend on that technology and you can gain some knowledge by working with it.A good start is ebay where you can find wheelchair motors and scooter transaxles.Sometimes they will be complete with the motor speed controls.
