What type of engine should I get for my go kart?

I'm building a go kart in my shop class at school and I don't know much about go kart engines. should I use a rideing lawn mower engine or somthing else. Would a riding lawn mower engine be able to go very fast, or would it be slow with more tork?

Haha, a mower engine would be fine as long as it has a horizontal shaft, a push mower with a vertical shaft obviously wont work and you can't just turn it on it's side.

That being said, find a cheapo beat up 2 stroke dirt bike 125 or 250cc, the engine already has a transmission with an external shifter and clutch lever that can be easily hooked up to gokart controls, and hold on for dear life :)
